On April 18, 1923, in New York City, more than 70,000 fans came to watch as Yankee Stadium opened. It
quickly became one of the world’s most revered stadiums. As so many things happen in NYC, the stadium opened in dramatic fashion with Babe Ruth hitting a three-run home run that won the game. Writing about the game, New York Evening Telegram sportswriter Fred Lieb described Yankee Stadium as “the house that Ruth built,” and that name has stuck to this day.
Next year, Yankee stadium will cease to be used (the Yankees are building a new stadium across the street). But hopefully the new stadium will continue the legacy of great baseball in a historic atmosphere. Hopefully in 80 years fans will be able to look back and see that the new Yankee Stadium is as appreciated as the old one.
