Are You Down with GSP? Yeah, You Know Me.

Georges St. Pierre
Saturday, January 31st, was the day of a fight anticipated since 2006. Georges St. Pierre (GSP) edged out a very close decision against BJ Penn in 2006, and BJ has wanted revenge ever since.  UFC 94 awarded him that opportunity.

Both fighters are incredibly talented and consistently getting better with each fight.  BJ, known as “the Prodigy,” has world class Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ or jits).  In only three years, he received his Black Belt and won a world BJJ competition against those with much more experience than him.  Not to mention his stand-up is pretty decent.  In fact, the only hole in his game is himself.

BJ mentally has won every fight prior to stepping into the cage and actually wants to be involved in a battle, he is a brawler.  The problem is that he has been notorious in the past for not taking his fights seriously.  “The Prodigy” always has relied on his raw talent and never really prepared heavily for fights.  The past couple of years have been a totally different story.

In the other corner is GSP.  This Canadian garbage man, has nothing but shear determination.  He is known throughout the MMA community for his athleticism.  The conditioning of GSP is never a question.  As far as skills, he is very diverse.

He grew up in the discipline of Karate and has become well-rounded over the years.  To prepare for fights he trains with experts in boxing, grappling, kick boxing and even against Olympic wrestlers.  His drive and talent are so advanced that the Olympic team actually was encouraging him to wrestle for them.  This is quite impressive as he has no official wrestling background.

With all that said, time for the fight.  I have been reading about this fight for months, and no one really could predict the winner.  All predictions read more like a shake of the magic 8-Ball.

In the ring, GSP owned BJ for rounds 2, 3, and 4…round 1 was close but still GSP.  The beating he put on BJ was so intense that BJ never left his corner for round 5.  The doctor and his brother/coach called it.
