Olympic Games Roundup

by Ronald A. Rowe March 1st, 2010 | Olympics
It was a dream scenario for the men's hockey team from Canada. The Canadians were embarrassed in the preliminary rounds, only to find themselves in the Gold medal round facing off against the bullies to their south who had so traumatized them just a week earlier. A spectacular come from behind rally to tie it up (OK, in their dream scenario, it would have been the Canadians coming from behind to tie, but still...) followed by an incredible overtime period in which they claimed victory in the sport that Canadians consider to be theirs and theirs alone.

Olympic Update

by Ronald A. Rowe February 22nd, 2010 | Hockey, Olympics
As I write these words, the sound of Canada's loss to the US in Men's Hockey is reverberating throughout the Great White North. It sounds a little bit like "What just happened, eh?" The US team's 5-3 victory over Canada puts the US in the driver's seat for the gold and Canada in the loser's bracket where they'll take their revenge on teams like Belize or China.

2010 Winter Olympics

by Ronald A. Rowe February 15th, 2010 | Olympics
The Olympics have a funny way of making us suddenly care about sports that we've never been interested in, maybe never even heard of, before.  Two years ago, it was women's volleyball.  Two years before that, curling captured everyone's attention.  What new sport will land on America's collective radar this year?

If American Johnny Spillane had held his lead for just a few more seconds, we might be talking about the Nordic Combined Normal Hill Event.  Maybe it is good that a French athlete edged him out at the last moment.  "Nordic Combined Normal Hill Event" doesn't exactly roll off

Michael Phelps Takes out the Trash

by Joe Lawrence August 6th, 2009 | Olympics, Sporting Events
Trash talk is very common in sports.  However, if you are going to talk trash for weeks about someone you better have more than a fancy swimsuit to back up your words.  Michael Phelps proved this point of mine against Milorad Cavic in Rome recently in the World Championships.

Milorad Cavic is the swimmer Phelps beat by a fingernail in the Beijing Olympics path to eight gold medals.  Cavic and many others protested that Cavic actually won the race despite photo evidence and the touchpad time.  He was determined to crush Phelps in a Rome rematch and called him out publicly.

The Most Underrated Sport- Part 2

by Ronald A. Rowe July 8th, 2009 | Gymnastics, Olympics, Track and Field
Last week, I wrote about the incredible ballet of strength, speed, and stamina that is Ninja Warrior (called Sasuke in Japan). The contest is held twice a year in Japan and attracts contestants from all over the world. If you’ve seen the show Wipeout on ABC, I want to assure you that Ninja Warrior is absolutely nothing like that.

OK, they are both similar in that they involve Japanese obstacle courses. But while Wipeout is a silly show featuring whatever housewife or insurance salesman the network can rope into it, Ninja Warrior is a serious competition, with 100 top competitors chosen
