When it comes to sporting events I tend to be nostalgic. So even though I was not even contemplated yet as a human being when the Dodgers left Brooklyn, part of me was saddened by yesterday’s final game at Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Florida. The Dodgers announced last year that they are moving their spring training preparation to an Arizona location next year, and that this would be the last year for them in Florida.

The great love that Brooklynites had for the Dodgers and the way they adopted them as lunchpail players always resonated with me. Dodgertown was the last piece of that story. You still can envision when players played because the game was fun and not because they were paid more than most third world country’s GDP.

Even though the Orioles are set to move into the facility next year, it won’t be the same. Part of baseball’s connection to a glorified past will be gone.

I think Mr. Dodger, Tommy Lasorda, summed it up the best, “We’re going to leave, but we’re not leaving our memories.”
