Debating The Details: Is Golf a sport or a game of skill?

July 30th, 2008 by Jason Baudendistel

This has been debated before, but what evidence is there for either side? On one side of the spectrum you must admit that golfers are usually in good physical shape and play through even extremely severe elements of weather. The opposite argument would point out that it would not appear to take much athletic ability to strike a ball that is sitting stationary on the ground.

Another pro-sport note is that in the height of competition and in bigger tournaments golfers display nerves of steel as they march to victory. However, looking at it all objectively, how can someone who rides a cart for a portion of the day be considered an athlete? The fact that many golfers wear slacks and polo shirts adds to the appearance of a lack of physical exertion put forth by a golfer. It has been proven that the act of striking a golf ball does provide a cardiovascular workout (although you still can’t help but debate the lack of physical exertion compared to any other of the other major sports). In football, baseball, hockey, and soccer you have running and quick changes of direction. These are obviously absent in golf.

Regardless, however, of whether you feel golf should be considered a sport, it does require a great deal of skill and fortitude to place a second shot just inches from the cup. So, although In my personal opinion golf is not a sport, I do admit that it is definitely a game that requires great skill.
