Time to Get Offensive

November 11th, 2008 by Joe Lawrence

“The best offense is a good defense.”  We have heard this throughout the years, and today I am going to challenge them.  In fact, I believe the exact opposite.

The worst possible thing to happen to you is to fight from a defensive position.  Instead of thinking about how to attack your opponent, you are trying to figure a way to escape the barrage of strikes.  Think about it in terms of a game.  If you have ever played chess, you will understand this perfectly.  There are times when your opponent is chasing down a certain piece, and you are forced to find a way out of the jam.  Usually, when you are doing this you end up making a mistake and paint yourself into a corner.

The same is true during a fight.  When you are forced to constantly block the strikes of another, eventually your guard will drop and you will get hit.  Pay attention to the next fight you watch, and you will see how the one getting attacked is only thinking about how to stop the attack and is being controlled by the other.

I have seen this many times during fights and actually based many of my fight plans off of this strategy.  When I knew I was clearly out-gunned by a better fighter I would keep him on the defensive as much as possible.  I would throw totally random jabs and quick kicks to keep him thinking.  While he was backing up and trying not to get hit I was exploiting any kink in his armor that could be found.

This strategy awarded me many victories over contenders who had better technique and more natural talent than I.  Strategies such as this are able to be employed in our daily lives also.  When the boss is trying to come down on you, answer her question with a question.  For example, have you figured out how many people are going to be off for the big surge next week?

When you keep them on the defense you win.  The best defense is a good offense.
