True Fans or Terrorists?

January 27th, 2009 by Joe Lawrence

Last weekend I heard the second best possible piece of news a fan could receive…the Steelers are going to the Super Bowl.  Just to be clear the best news would be them actually winning.  As I got the good news, there already were people trying to spoil this news.  In fact, they live for it.

I was working the flight line at Charleston AFB, SC, as the game was in play.  Every break I checked my phone for the score.  After the game I received a barrage of text messages from all my family and friends who also root for the greatest football club to walk the earth (I am not biased at all).  I also received messages of those whose whole purpose in life is to see my team fail…Cleveland Browns fans.

These very sad people are focused on the destruction of Pittsburgh.  I actually know people who have more anti-Steelers apparel than they do Cleveland stuff.  These are the same guys (and gals) who come to the sports bars during games just to root against the Steelers.

Why?  It is not because they are true fans.  It is because their team sucks so badly they have nothing (and I mean nothing) to look forward to each Sunday.  That leaves only one thing, cheer for the demise of their bitter rival.

However, a quick sidenote.  In order to be a rival…you have to at least be competitive.  Cleveland hasn’t won against the Steelers since October of 2003!  I am sorry Cleveland, but the rivalry is dead.  I actually consider Baltimore a real rival, they sometimes win.  At the least they give us a challenge.

Where does that leave us?  Right there with the sad, sad fans who need a cause to rally around.  This is pretty close to the same mentality displayed by the terrorists who hate the U.S.  They cheered in the streets after 9-11.

I never thought I would quote our new president, but he hit the nail on the head…”people will judge you on what you can build…not what you destroy.”  Cleveland, focus on building a team.

Go Steelers!!
